Gothenburg's underworld
About this tour
Welcome on a walk through the fortified Gothenburg with a visit to “Göteborgs undre värld” — the remaining underground parts of the city's defenses. This is a unique opportunity, available only through Walknet. From its founding in 1621 into the 1800s, the city within the moat was one of Europe's best-fortified. Walls, shelters and storerooms for soldiers shaped the entire town. We show how the city was built and tell the story of fortress Gothenburg. The walk lasts 1.5–2 hours. We show the Carolus Dux bastion: beneath Pedagogen (the former Sociala Huset) lie underground shelters, so-called casemates. The walk also includes a visit to the Carolus Undecimus Rex bastion by Kungsgatan.
